Network access: updates

If you’re working from home, you’ll have noticed some connectivity issues when trying to log-in to the network. IT is aware and is looking for possible solutions.

Conserve network access

To manage resource utilization of the network and VPN access, we’re asking all employees:

Do:

  • use VPN access only during your designated shift by region
  • save files on your laptop or tablet desktop
  • download large documents outside normal business hours
  • use your mobile devices whenever possible to send and receive emails
  • connect to VPN to get what you need and then disconnect

Don’t:

  • stay logged into VPN for long periods of time unless required to support critical services
  • disregard this guidance

Exception—employees performing critical services

All employees performing critical functions are excluded from this provision. If you’re unsure or haven’t been informed of your status, ask your manager.

Note: all employees are expected to follow the designated regional shifts for VPN access:

  • eastern region and national capital region 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. EST
  • Toronto and western region starting from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. local time

Off-peak hours:

  • usage outside of 7 am to 5 pm EST is not limited to any specific region

Tip for using your mobile device

  1. Download the Samsung X application (for Windows 10 or Mac) and install it on their personal computer at home (available to some users a Samsung smartphone)
  2. Connect your Samsung smartphone to your personal computer with the USB charging cable. This will allow you to use your personal computer as the interface to your Samsung smartphone.
  3. Continue using your assigned mobile device and/or personal phone, if applicable.
  4. Protected and/or sensitive information must be guarded as normal –it is prohibited to share, transfer or open these protected documents on an unsecured device and/or network.
